A Few Things to Live By….

Here are a few quotes that I try to keep in mind; either from the day-to-day or as life hands me trials and hurdles to overcome. Some are even things I try to recall in times of great happiness and joy:

  • Efficiency is intelligent laziness. ~David Dunham (And I am super efficient too, lol)
  • People who look through keyholes are apt to get the idea that most things are keyhole shaped. ~Author Unknown (I try to keep an open mind so I do not begin to get that myopic and ignorant view of things)
  • We judge others by their behavior. We judge ourselves by our intentions. ~Ian Percy (Mostly because we cannot assume others intentions, even if they seem so transparent)
  • We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are. ~Anaïs Nin (It is so true; our own experiences really pave the way for how we interpret the things around us. I try, most of the time, to stop and consider other possibilities, even if I have a hard time wrapping my head around why some things are the way they are)
  • The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress. ~Joseph Joubert, Pensées, 1842 (It isn’t a secret that I like to think I am right, but if it is at the detriment of progress, then I try to weigh the options of what I will really win by being victorious in the debate)
  • A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying… that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. ~Alexander Pope, in Swift, Miscellanies (This one always dovetails nicely with the previous one)
  • What’s frustrating about being disliked is that it’s invariably for the wrong reason. ~Robert Brault (I find this true on many fronts; I even fall victim to this, but sometimes it is a right reason, I just shouldn’t let it get the better of me)
  • What we see depends mainly on what we look for. ~John Lubbock (This is why I try to keep up a good and patient attitude in my personal life. When we try to see beauty and truth, we tend to find it)
  • One man’s frankness is another man’s vulgarity. ~Kevin Smith (That is me on a pretty regular basis. Some people can find it abrasive, but it is my way)
  • It is not the man who has little, but he who desires more, that is poor. ~Seneca (Sometimes I remind myself that I have my health, my family, friends, and lover, and that should prove me to be more wealthy than someone who is lacking those; even if sometimes I feel all alone or in less than happy circumstances)
  • Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. ~Marcel Proust (Without happiness, where would we really be?)
  • When something is missing in your life, it usually turns out to be someone. ~Robert Brault (And it is important to not let them get away once they are there!)
  • Soul-mates are people who bring out the best in you. They are not perfect but are always perfect for you. ~Author Unknown (Sometimes it’s just about the right fit; everything else will eventually catch up to meet you – timing, distance, etc.)

There are many, many more, but I will consider this a first installment with maybe a few more to come…

Until next time…
